Story

Ken Bob’s older brother didn’t think Herman would be able to handle the 17-mile hike on Saturday. After all we were going to be climbing up to 11,000 feet altitude. And on Friday Herman didn’t look like he had acclimated to the altitude at 5000 feet yet. Herman had been doing nothing except just laying down all day.

But, that’s what Herman does when there isn’t anything to do.

Herman wasn’t just ready to hike the whole distance, which took us all day long, sun-up to sun-down in July, in the northern hemisphere (nearly 15-hours of daylight). Instead of holding us back, he was eager to move faster than the rest of us. All the way up the mountain, Herman wanted to go faster. At the lake at the top of the hike, he raced around and through the water, having a blast. And on the way down, Herman still wanted to go faster than anyone else.

Herman also discovered snow! In some shade at altitude.
